Genealogy/Research

Aside from the organizations described to the right, there are a multitude of computer programs and other software that may be helpful in researching family history or drawing out your own family tree.

While we cannot recommend one specific product over another, many can be found at "big box" retailers, office supply stores, bookstores or various online retailers.

If you use a software program that is particularly helpful to you, or if you discover other sources of information that might help someone researching family history, please tell us in an e-mail to: rpi@gis.net

Researching your family's history:

The Suffolk County Probate and Family Court Registry may be a good source of information if you are researching your family's history and one or more of your ancestors lived in Suffolk County.

As the Registry maintains records of probate and family related legal matters - some dating back as far as 1636 - our office might be able to provide you with information and insight about a particular family member.

There are three agencies and organizations that the Registry of Probate specifically recommends as particularly good sources of genealogical information.

The first is the Massachusetts Archives maintained by the Secretary of the Commonwealth. A link to a description of the historical materials available from the state archive can be made by clicking here.

Another excellent resource is available right here in Boston. The New England Historic Genealogical Society boasts of over 110 million names in its online databases, and countless other historic documents at the NEHGS research library at 101 Newbury Street, Boston.

Since 1845, NEHGS has helped members succeed with genealogical research. Members of the staff have particular expertise in areas including Native American, English, Irish, Scottish and Canadian ancestries. The NEHGS website can be reached by clicking here.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has also gone worldwide to collect historic data and family histories under the "Family Search" banner. This organization can be reached by clicking here.

Good luck in your search!
