SUFFOLK
REGISTRY OF PROBATE REACHES OUT TO AREA SENIORS WITH NEW
INFORMATIONAL PROGRAM:
The
Suffolk County Probate and Family Court Registry has expanded
its Community Outreach Program to include free informational
meetings for senior citizens. The special daytime sessions are
designed to make seniors aware of Registry programs and
services, and to offer free legal assistance to seniors in
partnership with two lawyers’ associations.
“The
Registry is in a unique position to instruct the elderly about
ways to protect their assets and to make sure that their
wishes are followed in the future,” said Register of Probate
Richard Iannella. “Our seniors shouldn’t have to worry
about losing their home or the ability to decide how they are
cared for in the future, and I hope that our efforts will give
them the information and peace-of-mind that they deserve.”
As
part of the program presented by a specially trained Registry
representative, seniors will hear about ways to protect their
homes and other assets, and to provide for their families and
loved-ones in the future. Topics to be covered include simple
wills, durable power of attorney, health care proxy and the
Homestead Act, as well as explanations of other protections
provided to seniors under the law.
In partnership with the Boston Bar Foundation and
Women’s Bar Foundation, volunteer attorneys will also be
available to assist seniors with the preparation and filing of
these documents. The free services
are available to anyone
over age 60 and living in the city of Boston, or to low income
seniors aged 65 and older in Revere, Winthrop and Chelsea.
